FC London players jog around the pitch
during team practice at the North London Fields in London, Ontario on
Monday, July 22, 2013.
FC London coach Martin Painter isn’t worried about anything the other teams are going to do this weekend.
“We have a team that’s good enoughto win , if we play our game,” he said. “We have to play consistently throughout the game. If we do that, it won’t matter what everyone else does.”
The Blues are in Thunder Bay as they begin their quest for a second USL Premier Development League soccer championship in a row.
As winners of the Great Lakes Division title, FC London will play the Heartland Division’s second-place Real Colorado Foxes.
That game will be played Saturday at 6 p.m.
If London wins, they’ll move to Sunday’s Central Conference championship, where they’ll play the winner ofthe game between the Heartland Division champ Thunder Bay Chill and the Great Lakes’ Division No. 2 seed Michigan Bucks.
Those teams will play Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Foxes finished the regular season with a 9-3-2 record and 29 points, nine ahead of the third-place team. The Foxes feature Oliver Gore, who finished second in the PDL’s scoring race by slamming home 14 goals.
“I don’t know if having won it last year is going to make things any easier this year for us, but it will help us — because we have a lot of players who have been through so many big games,” Painter said.
The Blues will be strengthened by the addition of central midfielder Harris Cekic, who just joined the team after playing soccer in Bosnia earlier this summer. Depth is always an advantage for any team that wants to make a deep run through the playoffs.
Cekic was with last year’s FC London championship team.
There is no broadcast of any of the games this weekend, but the play-by-play will be tweeted.
