London, ON – FC LONDON claimed the 2013 Great Lakes Division title with
a 3:1 win over the Toronto Lynx this afternoon on the road. Having
clinched first place in the division, FC LONDON will move on to face the
Real Colorado Foxes (second in the Heartland Division) in the first
game of the Central Conference playoffs.
The Boys in Blue outperformed their opponents through the heat of a
Sunday afternoon match. The Lynx had an opportunity to take an early
lead just 3 minutes into the game with a shot off the post that they
thought was in. Protests from the bench would result in a yellow card.
In the 12th minute, FC LONDON offense would connect with a combined
effort for to draw first blood. Ayris, fed by Johnson and Hughes, would
make the pass to Boyd for the tap in. Toronto responded with a tying
goal on a long throw flicked past Haynes in the 17th minute. Both teams
then exhibited some sloppy play with mistimings in the air and the score
would remain 1:1 through the first half.
FC LONDON came out
strong to begin the second half. Owens put away the go-ahead goal on a
breakaway in the 48th minute on a lead pass from Ayris. Ayris followed
this up with an insurance goal a couple of minutes later chipping the
keeper after a long clearing play from Haynes to put the score at 3:1.
Painter then turned to strategy to maintain the lead with effective
substitutions allowing FC LONDON to continue to pressure on the
counter-attack with fresh legs.
“Winning three games in five
days, including a battle in 35 degree heat, truly shows the calibre of
this squad,” says FC LONDON head coach Martin Painter. “We now have to
look to Friday for our last regular season game in front of a home
crowd, and then toward a similar challenge to last year in the
post-season. We have some very exciting games ahead of us.”
